This positional notation however appears on two unrelated sets of rune stones allegedly discovered in North America. 6. Greek numerals were used by Archimedes, Diophantus and others in a positional notation not very different from ours. 7. In both cases, this origin resulted in values that used a decimal base but did not include positional notation . 8. The Roman numerals system remained in common use in Europe until positional notation came into common use in the 16th century. 9. In a more developed form, positional notation also uses a vinculum ( a horizontal line placed over the repeating digits ). 10. The authors of the North American rune stones do not seem to understand the positional notation or the concept of with little consistency.
